The Florida Grand Opera

JUSTIN MOSS: As a child in San Francisco, I learned to read music and studied violin, which was a requirement. Now I was on the stage, rehearsing along with the other singers, holding my green Schermer piano vocal score, following annotations, when suddenly I had an epiphany. “This is what I’ve been waiting for my whole life!” I said to myself. It was a life-changing experience. I began spending all my money on opera tickets, attended all the opera seasons.

In college, I studied English literature and managed the art music library at the University of California in Santa Barbara. The summer of 1969, I graduated from college and was looking around for work. A friend and I were hired to do properties for the Music Academy of the West opera production of Tales of Hoffmann. It had a famous stage director and famous conductor. From there, I moved on to other positions in the field.

I was general director of the Boston Lyric Company—a troubled landscape at the time—when I got a call from the artistic director of the Opera Guild of Fort Lauderdale telling me the general director of the Greater Miami Opera had died. I thought this could be a promising opportunity.
